Little late to the party yet former Philadelphia 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie's resignation really stuck with me. I talked with two friends about it which doesn't usually happen with a General Manager steps down. Hinkie wrote a 13-page resignation letter to Sixers management after Jerry Colangelo, the Sixers Chairman of Basketball Operations, announced his son, Bryan and Danny Ferry would be essentially co-general mangers. They offered Hinkie another role in the front office and he refused.
While this is nepotism at its finest, Bryan did a good job with Phoenix before running Toronto into the ground. It's a fair assumption that Mike D'Antoni becomes the head coach next season even though Philly still owes Brett Brown a ton of money. Ferry built winners in Cleveland and Atlanta therefore he's an added resource as well. That being said, Jerry told Hinkie to get rid of analytics per reports which makes no sense in today's NBA.
He had the pieces of a winner, but it took too long for the Sixers brass. They are one year from being a 30-35 win team then playoffs in 2018. I do think the Sixers were disappointed with Dario Saric pick as well as Jahlil Okafor. This team might look different with Zach LaVine and Kristaps Porzingis.
Still, Philadelphia is in rebuild mode without a plan or direction. How can they convince veterans to come to Philly? More money than anybody else? Trade their young assets for veteran talent? This becomes the most interesting team to watch this offseason.
Charlie.
