Henry Ellenson Created a 'Dangerous Culture' at Marquette?

The one-and-done culture can be exhausting. Athletes with tremendous potential come into a program with one agenda – to become more attractive to NBA teams. The media and fans are left guessing all season whether or not the player will declare for the draft. This begs the question: Doesn’t the team wonder the same thing? Isn’t that distracting? Players who leave after one year of college basketball stall programs that aren’t built for the one-and done culture. Marquette is one of those programs (Marquette Wire

A part of me knows I shouldn't give this much attention. This is a sports writer at
college hurt he doesn't get to cover Henry Ellenson or fails to understand turning down 9 to 12 million dollars.  I also have a feeling he let his 75-year-old grandfather write the column since it sounds like a classic thing we see from an older sports writer.

First and foremost, dangerous is a terribly loaded clickbait word to use here. This isn't a 'dangerous' thing. Nothing Ellenson did is even close to being 'dangerous.' Second, Kentucky must be really 'dangerous', right?  Kentucky, a team with a national championship plus two more Final Four appearances since the one-and-done rule. Also when is Kansas full of one-and-done's?  One or two a year, but nothing like other schools.

The other puzzling thing about this column is there's zero mention to academics. If you want to make a case against one-and-done's, that's where you start but this flew right over Pete's head.

If Ellenson played at Michigan State or Wisconsin, columns would be written about how 'Wojo needs better recruits' versus a freshman is making a decision for himself. One-and-done's aren't going to be regular things for Marquette, but sometimes, there are times where it's going to happen like with Ellenson.  If Marquette made the tournament and won a game, no one is saying shit about a one-and-done culture at Marquette. Finally, it takes more than one person to build a culture, let's pump the breaks.

Best of luck, Hank. I'm sorry there are Marquette fans who don't understand how college basketball and the draft work.

Charlie.
