Year 2 of the BrewCap where we look at all of the things during one Milwaukee Brewers game. This is a rough year so we'll try to keep it light and humorous without getting too mad about things unless it's really terrible. Sorry, I missed ya on the third game of the season. That's not a good look, but to be fair, my body shut down and woke up to go to work, that'll happen.
Some things change while others stay the same. St. Louis Cardinals beating up on the Milwaukee Brewers isn't a new thing rather something we've seen for the past couple of years. Just when people wondered if the Cardinals were in a decline after a rough week, they come out like mad men putting up nine runs in the first three innings. They would win this one, 10-1 and take the first game of the series.
Player of the Day (Brewers) - Scooter Gennett (2B): The Spring of Scooter continues with a two-hit performance today for the Brewers second baseman. Gennett is hitting .409 to start the season. Gennett has one hit in every game he's started thus far in the 2016 season. I'm happy to see the hot start from Scooter, and a part of me thinks he's seeing better pitches as the respect level for Ryan Braun has gone up again. Therefore Gennett could have a year like Nyjer Morgan did where he excelled hitting second.
Player of the Day (Cardinals) - Jeremy Hazelbaker (LF): In the most Cardinals thing ever, we have Jeremy Hazelbaker. An outfielder who was cut from the Los Angeles Dodgers last season and figured his shit out in the last six months. Hazelbaker had a big Spring and now gets starter's time with the team. He had a big day at the plate with four hits on four at-bats knocking his average up to .526. Hazelbaker scored a run as well. Of course, it's the Cardinals that discover this guy, that's why they've made the playoffs the last six years in a row.
Golden Sombrero Honoree - Taylor Jungmann: Not the outing he would have liked to have after a strong start in Milwaukee against the Giants. Jungmann struggled from the opening pitch of the game and could never find his form out there. He had a couple blowup starts like this one as the season went on. He should be fine and bounce back nicely for his start against Pittsburgh although that won't be easy.
Highlight: The game was 1-1 after the third inning - Sure, Milwaukee did not receive a good outing from Jungmann, but the bullpen did an alright job after him though. Tyler Cravy, Chris Capuano, Sam Freeman and Carlos Torres only gave up two runs over seven innings of work. That's a damn good effort by the bullpen. Good thing Milwaukee has the day off tomorrow as all of those pitchers will need a rest after this one.
Lowlight: Too many Cardinals made contact - You will not win many games giving up 19 hits. Sure the bullpen did great in the final seven innings, but they gave up eleven hits on their own. St. Louis is a hard team to strikeout, and Milwaukee must adjust to that although the pitchers might not be good enough to do it.
Next Up: Milwaukee will get a day off in St. Louis before heading back at it versus the Cardinals on Wednesday night. Chase Anderson will look to build off his first start of the season as he takes on Mike Leake, a friend of the program from his days with the Reds. Jonathan Lucroy and Gennett both have great numbers against him for their careers.
Charlie.
