BrewCap Vol. 2: Cueto Outduels Nelson

Year 2 of the BrewCap where we look at all of the things during one Milwaukee Brewers game. This is a rough year so we'll try to keep it light and humorous without getting too mad about things unless it's really terrible.

Milwaukee begins the second straight year with consecutive home losses. Brewers played a good game, but they couldn't compete with Johnny Cueto who dazzled through seven innings. Giants look strong out of the gate which should surprise no one in an even year. San Francisco will have their brooms out on Wednesday afternoon.

Player of the Day (Brewers) - Jimmy Nelson (P): When your team is bad, bright spots are always welcomed. Nelson pitched masterfully in this game. He went 8.1 innings with five hits allowed, only one walk, three strikeouts and two rusn. Nelson made one error with Brandon Crawford, but that's it. This is a very encouraging sign given Wily Peralta was a damn disaster on Opening Day. I have a feeling we'll look forward to Nelson starts all season

Player of the Day (Giants) - Johnny Cueto (P):
Like Denard Span did
yesterday, Johnny Cueto came in with a bang for his Giants career. Cueto went seven innings with six hits allowed, one run earned and four strikeouts. Milwaukee couldn't get much off Cueto who did not walk a single batter in his seven innings of work. Cueto should be very good with the Giants providing a devastating one-two punch with Madison Bumgarner.

Golden Sombrero Honoree - Aaron Hill - Not a good start for the Brewers third baseman as he only has one hit through the first two games. Hill only saw seven pitches in three at-bats. That's not the Stearns way at the plate. It's very early for me to be critical or snarky, give it a week.

Highlight: Nelson could have went longer than 8.1If this were deep into the season, we might have seen Nelson go into the ninth inning. He ended at 88 pitches and still was cooking with gas late. I understand why Craig Cousnell pulled him though. On a bright note, Michael Blazek and Jeremy Jeffress pitched well in their first outings.

Lowlight: Offense continues to sputter - Through the first two games, Milwaukee has a total of four runs. Granted, they are facing one of the best pitching staffs in baseball therefore the shock level should be low yet you hate to see guys get off to a tough start.

When The Game Turned: Fourth inning, but to be honest, this game could have looked a lot more ugly than 2-1. Nelson got out of a bases loaded, no-out jam with an infield fly to Brandon Belt then gave up a fielder's choice which let in the go-ahead run then Nelson recorded the final out.

Next Up: Milwaukee will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon as Taylor Jungmann will face off against Jeff Samardjiza. There are a lot of new faces, but the Brewers had seen some success against him in

Charlie.
