BrewCap Vol 1: Opening Day Disappoints Again

Year 2 of the BrewCap where we look at all of the things during one Milwaukee Brewers game. This is a rough year so we'll try to keep it light and humorous without getting too mad about things unless it's really terrible.

Even though this isn't going to be a great year to be a Brewers fan, you sort of hoped maybe Opening Day would start out hot. Milwaukee wins, and optimism is high for one day because they took down one of the best pitchers in baseball, Madison Bumgarner. Instead, Milwaukee's pitching would cost them dearly including a trainwreck of the eighth inning allowing five Giants runs coming into score.

Player of the Day (Brewers) - Scooter Gennett (2B): He had a nice day at the plate versus a left-handed pitcher, and a Cy Young pitcher at that. Gennett went 2-for-3 with a home run and drew a walk. Gennett blasted the shot off Bumgarner which tied that game at that point. Brewers' second basemen believes in his heart of hearts he can hit left-handed bats, and good on Craig Counsell for letting him try against the best.

Player of the Day (Giants) - Denard Span (CF): Hell of a debut in a Giants
uniform for the former National and Twin this afternoon with two hits including a home run and five runs driven in. Span also scored twice. He's the leadoff hitter the Giants have missed for the past couple years. Also Matt Duffy deserves a hat tip for his big afternoon.

Golden Sombrero Honoree - Wily Peralta - This is new where we give the 'Least Valuable player' an award. All of the fears about Spring Training came true for Peralta. He struggled to find the strike zone as well as could not connect with a third strike pitch. It's only one game, but the returns do not look good for the supposed ace. .

Highlight: Brewers were actually productive off MadBum - Sure, the game ended in a nine-run rout, but many people will miss the fact Milwaukee did all of their scoring damage of Bumgarner. They also drew five walks against them. These are both good things moving forward amid the bad loss.

Lowlight: Ariel Pena had two outs in the inning with two runners on. All he had to do is finish off Span, and Milwaukee has a fighting chance in the next two innings. Instead, Span, Joe Panik and Buster Posey all hit home runs and send everyone home early.

When The Game Turned: Fifth inning when Carlos Torres gave up a two-run homer to Duffy. Doubled up the score and that's all San Fran needed.

Next Up: Milwaukee will play host again tomorrow night with Jimmy Nelson on the mound taking on Johnny Cueto.

Charlie.
