Willett Captures Green Jacket as Spieth Wilts

ESPN's Scott Van Pelt says "Sports are the greatest reality show."  Those words always have stuck with me because anything can happen. Jordan Spieth led by six strokes at one point, and five strokes as he made the turn onto the back nine. It would all come apart for Spieth, and Danny Willett would have a bogey-free round of 67 to give England their first Masters win since Nick Faldo. The collapse will always be remembered first, but Willett's back nine was a thing of beauty.

Spieth collapsed like nothing we have seen in golf since Rory McIlroy hit a cottage on number 10 and lost a lead similar to Spieth's on the Sunday back nine. What's incredible about Spieth's meltdown is he hit the water twice on one hole resulting in a quadruple bogey, and how cool and collective he had been all week with the lead. Even though Spieth gave up three strokes in the final two holes on Saturday, he pushed McIlroy into a locker and established himself as the best in the world. This should have been a coronation of Spieth's mastery at Augusta.

People will talk about the collapse in great length in the next few weeks, but what needs to be remembered is Spieth battled back to nearly force a playoff. He knew the tournament couldn't be won after he two-putted 16 for a par. 17 had been his hardest hole of the week, and if he left himself a safe hole, there might have been a chance for some magic on 18. Spieth is a two-time major champion with a big-time resume under his belt at 22. He'll be fine, and I guarantee you he wins another major this season.

As for Willett, he introduced himself to the causal golf fan. He surged up the world golf rankings and figures to be a major player in the Ryder Cup this Fall. Willett had his moments this year at different events where it wouldn't shock golf fans to see him win a major. The way he did was shocking. Willett proved to be as steady as any golfer on the course especially down the stretch with all things going on around him. The biggest putt was the one on 16 where he added an extra stroke with a birdie. He's a cerebral assassin, and this isn't the last time we've heard from Willett.

Oakmont should be a barrel of fun this summer for the next major. They are known for the fastest greens in all of the land, and there will be so much awesome bitching since most of the players didn't play in the 2007 U.S. Open. Spieth will be considered a favorite given how well he does with his putter. It figures to be a bloodbath much like Chamber's Bay last season.
